Manoukian Brothers Rugs

Manoukian Brothers in Shepherd Park is the last of several Oriental rug businesses in the city owned and operated by five brothers. The first company opened on Washington Circle in 1922 and over the years other companies were formed with differing partnerships at Dupont Circle, Tenleytown, and Adams Morgan. Since 1954, Manoukian Brothers has been the only remaining company. It is presently owned and managed by Paul, the brothers' only son, and his wife, Dona.

Paul, an engineer-retiree of WMATA, has been at the helm since 1994. (He claims to have built Metro with the help of 5,000 others!) His aims are honesty and reliability in the sales and service of Oriental rugs. Manoukian respects a code of ethics advocated by the National Oriental Rug Retailers Association, including the tenet that each rug should be priced. Paul goes farther to strive to fairly price each rug. He finds that many rug businesses obfuscate values by greatly overpricing their rugs. Even after a markdown, their final price seldom makes up for the original misrepresentation.

Although Manoukian has a substantial inventory, your initial pursuit of a rug may not be successful. In such cases, Paul will undertake your quest to network and glean other importer's stocks. A reasonable quality Oriental rug, properly used and cared for, can last a lifetime.
