On Saturday, April 4, 100 volunteers removed 300 bags of litter and 500 pounds of debris from the parkland and streams that make up the Fenwick Tributary. The cleanup was part of the 21st Potomac River Watershed Cleanup Day.
Councilmember Muriel Bowser gave Cub Scout Den 544 of Northminister Presbyterian Church a lesson in protecting the environment and stayed with them throughout the cleanup. One scout found a $20 bill that was contributed to the effort.
A six-year-old volunteer found a wallet in the stream, which was returned to its owner the next day. Volunteers reported finding lots of plastic bags, wrappers, and food containers and then some more unusual items: a TV antenna, snow shovel, car door, decayed shopping cart, skateboard, deer skeleton, plastic deck chair, and a soccer trophy. A car radiator that was discovered at the cleanup two years ago was successfully unearthed from the rain soaked streambed.
Thanks to Clif Grandy for once again organizing this event and to all of the volunteers and the others who contributed to the success of this year's effort, including Councilwoman Muriel Bowser, Nancy Lucas, Beth Allaben, John Bowman, Phylicia Bowman, David Coleman, Hampton Cross, Sybil Hammond, Jerome Paige, and Judy Ponds.
See you next year!
