A Neighborhood in Bloom
By Gloria Owens

With streets named for flowers and trees such as Jonquil, Geranium, Holly, Orchid, Spruce, and Redwood, the 7th Annual Shepherd Park Garden Tour on Sunday, May 22, 1-4 pm is a particularly fitting event to showcase the natural wonders of our neighborhoods.

Flowers of all hues and species, trees and shrubs, meandering pathways, yard art and patios, waterfalls and ponds, and unique landscaping will be available for your viewing pleasure. Gardens of all sizes will be featured, from the small city garden to the palatial estate, from the easily obtainable to the dream.

The funds raised from the garden tour support efforts to preserve and enhance our community's special gardens, parks, and green spaces. Past tours have benefited Caplan Park, the Lowell School Ecosystem, Shepherd Elementary School, Georgia Avenue, and a triangle in Colonial Village.

The tour is self-guided, which allows you to visit the gardens at your leisure and in any order. Tickets are $15 per person or $7 per person for SPCA members and their immediate family. Tickets may be purchased in advance by mailing in this form (and then picking them up the day of the tour) or purchased on the day of the tour in front of Shepherd Elementary School at the corner of 14th Street and Kalmia Road starting at 12:45 pm. Tour directories, which serve as your ticket, will be available at that time.

It's not too late to suggest a garden for the tour or to volunteer for the garden tour committee; contact the garden tour coordinator, Gloria Owens at gloowens@comcast.net or (202) 829 6886.
